Becky Nielsen, a first-grade teacher at Washington Elementary School, is seeking $500 to support the school's After School Book Club. This club, open to all interested 3rd and 4th graders with parental permission, aims to increase literacy by exposing students to a wide variety of books. The club meets every Tuesday after school, and this year they plan to read titles from the Nebraska Golden Sower list. The grant money will be used to purchase books from a local bookstore, which the students will be able to keep to encourage reading at home. Funds will also be used to provide snacks and milk for the participants, addressing the issue of food insecurity within the school community.
